A healthy functioning joint is critical to the soundness and success of the equine athlete.

Lameness is a leading factor of poor performance and often results in premature retirement of the racehorse. A commonly encountered issue by trainers is lameness as a result of a traumatic injury causing wear and tear to the joint surface. The ability of the joint to regenerate and repair itself once damaged is limited, hence the importance of reducing joint damage before it begins.

For the joint to function with minimal friction and pain, key lubricating factors – hyaluronic acid (HA) and lubricin are vital to the successful functioning of the joint. HA is a major component of synovial fluid (which functions to reduce friction in the joint), lubricating the surface of articular cartilage and protecting the tissue by acting as a scavenger of free radicals. Inflammation of the joint space often results in production of enzymes which cause damage to the joint tissues. While HA aids to ‘mop-up’ some of these destructive enzymes there is a limit to its capabilities once the stored HA is exhausted.

Much research has gone into the development of products aimed at protecting, regenerating and repairing the joint tissues. As the saying goes ‘prevention is better than cure’ and this certainly applies to the health and longevity of the equine joint. While much is still unknown in the field of joint health, we do know that HA plays a pivotal role. Administering HA to the equine athlete may improve joint elasticity, cartilage health, and aid in the lubrication of the joints. HA is available in several forms including intra-articular and intravenous injection, and orally.
