The “5 Ts” for testing rams are a practical checklist used by sheep producers (especially pre-joining) to assess whether a ram is fit, fertile, and ready to work.🐏What are the “5 Ts”?1. Teeth
•	Check age and condition.
•	Rams should have a good mouth to maintain body condition during joining.
•	Broken, missing, or worn teeth = poor performance risk.2. Testicles
•	Should be large, firm, even, and free of lumps.
•	Measure scrotal circumference (important indicator of fertility).
•	Soft, uneven, or small testicles can indicate reduced fertility.3. Toes (Feet)
•	Inspect for lameness, footrot, overgrown hooves, or infection.
•	Rams must be able to move freely and cover ewes.4. Top (Body condition)
•	Aim for condition score ~3–3.5 before joining.
•	Too thin = low stamina; too fat = reduced mobility and libido.
•	Check overall muscling and health.5. Tackle (Penis & sheath)
•	Check for injuries, infections, abnormalities (e.g. pizzle rot).
•	Ensure the ram can extend and function normally.A ram that’s off in just one area can impact your entire lambing result. Sound structure, good condition and proven fertility aren’t optional they’re the difference between a successful season and a missed opportunity. For support with your animal health program, speak to your vet or your local patch Abbey Representative.#abbeyanimalhealth #sheepfarming #australianfarming #livestockmanagement #ramhealth
